What is the difference between an orthosis and a prosthesis ?
Although it may seem complicated, the difference between an orthosis and a prosthesis can easily be explained in all evidence.

A prosthesis is an artificial device used to replace a missing or partially intact body part or severely damaged organ. An orthosis is an external orthopedic appliance which supports, assists or prevents the movement of a limb. This is why there are different types of orthoses such as functional, discharge, prophylactic, support, control, corrective, etc…

Will Medicare reimburse the cost ?
In Québec, the Régie de L'Assurance Maladie du Québec covers the cost of several devices such as those needed in the case of a malformation or physical handicap. These may include; prostheses, orthoses, orthopedic appliances and aids for mobility, posture and verticality. A valid RAMQ card is the first criteria for admissibility.

Secondly, the place of purchase must be an authorized dealer in a certified laboratory or establishment. The product must have been prescribed by a specialised healthcare professional and then be a part of a pre-established list issued by the RAMQ.

For more information, please consult the RAMQ web site.(www.ramq.gouv.qc.ca)

Do I need a prescription ?
A medical prescription is not necessary for consultation; however, a prescription is needed in order to be eligible for reimbursement by the RAMQ for orthoses, protheses and other orthopedic appliances. All our foot orthotics are manufactured with a medical prescription, in accordance with the laws governing the orthotists’ profession. Our other products may be bought at any time without a prescription. Private insurance companies usually require a prescription for the majority of products and services within the orthotic-prosthetic field and for medical supplies. In some cases a medical prescription for certain items can save sales taxes. (Please consult our sales policies for further information).

Who can provide an orthosis or prosthesis prescription ?
In order to be reimbursed by the RAMQ, orthoses, prostheses and other so called conventional products must have been prescribed by a specialised orthopedic surgeon, physio therapist, rhumatologist, neurologist or neurosurgeon. Other products can be purchased at any time without a prescription. In some cases, the RAMQ will accept prescriptions drawn up by a general practitioner, pediatrician, cardiologist or lung specialist. For more information please consult the RAMQ website at : www.ramq.gouv.qc.ca

In some cases where the product is not reimbursed by the RAMQ but is covered by an insurance company, the said company may accept to pay if the prescription was given by a general practitioner or any other specialist. (The patient must verify with his/her insurance company). Nevertheless, Médicus, as any conscientious laboratory would do, will fill all prescriptions that were made with the patient's well being in mind whether the product be insured or not.

Which services and equipments are covered by the RAMQ health insurance card ?
The RAMQ will cover the cost of an apparatus which has been made to provide aid for the physically deformed or deficient patient and the daily activities encompassing his/her life and surroundings. The insured must wear the orthosis to correct a deformity. The RAMQ will only cover the cost of one apparatus for the specific function of a limb and only one per limb segment.
